Diagonal Lines and Movement

Clegg uses diagonal lines to convey movement.  Objects appear to be falling, succumbing to the pull of gravity and creating tension.  Many of Clegg’s sculptures incorporate moveable parts.

Hot Afternoon is enlivened by its diagonally slanted base.  The skewed positioning of the prison door in Guantanamo adds drama to the piece; the sliding of the door adds movement.  Slasher spins, its two knife-wielding hands swinging close to the artist’s head.

“The artist’s craft is dangerous,” Clegg says.  “The moving parts of this sculpture express the vulnerability that you feel when you expose yourself to the world with your art.”
